Heat rises in the coliseum
That I call “the city”

Sifting through a penny-worth thrift shop
In the long-forgotten collections
Of brodie helmets and lady’s cigarette holders,
I find a little ring, perhaps a few thousand years too young

Did it once belong to a sultry Persian odalisque?
To a Roman empress, cloaked in luxuriant indigo?
My heart skips a few beats
The clock skips a few minutes

Among these rusted doughboy saucers,
The jewel of all jewels shone past the limp rust green
The murmillo of my heart battled
The thraex of my brain, telling me to pay no more attention

The heat cooled
The storekeeper had switched on the AC,
Depriving me of oxygen further

In the long-gone days of molasses floods
And smoke-signal telegraphs
Had some lady brought her prized ring
To this thrift shop for safekeeping,
Hoping that it would pass only for a cheap, gaudy jewel?
But I see too many flaws in the stone
For crystal to be the make

It feels as though a thousand seashells
Are tearing my skin apart,
Making me jump from it and be free of my restrictions
And fully admire this lady’s opal

Shall I purchase this beauty
That traveled far from Thrace or Tripoli?
Shall I wear this shining star for all my days?

No

Sadly, with no zlotys or francs at hand
I walk from the thrift store, pondering
“What sort of men wore those helmets?”

Inspired by a recent trip to Goodwill, where I found what looked like 90-year-old Brodie helmets (those flat helmets seen in WWI), and I wondered what sort of men wore the helmets. Then I found this huge ol' ring in the jewelry section, and it was too pretty not to notice. Alas, I had no money ot buy the ring or helmets.

Terms-
Doughboy- WWI infantryman
Murmillo and thraex- Gladiator types, which often were pitted against each other in the coliseum.
Molasses floods- Refers to an incident in 1919, where a molasses tank burst in Boston, flooding the city and suffocating many in the gooey mess.
The seashell flaying refers to the Greek philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, who was flayed to death in the same manner by her enemies.
Thrace- City in Greece.
Tripoli- City in Libya.
Zloty- Old currency in Poland.
Franc- Old currency in France.

I've often wondered that sort of thing about even the money I get from change back at a store.

I like the ideas you present and the imagery.

A: haha
E: you are, sir. I should go dig up Langston Hughes and tell him that.

Haha, I call change "STD money", since I don't know whose hands touched it before. So many different people use money, someone should make a movies about a quarter's journey through the pockets of America.

I would actually love to see a film like that.
Not a movie.
A film.

Because if you think about it, there's a difference.

True, like how March of the Penguins is a documentary FILM, and, say, Jurassic Park is a film. It depends on how it's filmed.

Well I mean film vs. movies to me is like...

say, classical music vs. some modern stuff.
classic literature vs. harry potter.

something like that.

The clear words in terms of the visuals. All rather crisp, for me.
