The deep-sea world
A bleak, cold graveyard
Devoid of light and life…

But, wait!
What's this?
A Lite-Brite show emerges
Ticker-tape parading from the void

Blinking, swirling phantasmagoria
An incomprehensible world,
Far beyond anyone’s ken
Unfathomable creatures of both beauty and monstrosity
Wondrously rare and extraordinary

A cornucopia of enticing beings
Their reflective eyes glowing in the sea-night
Predators, prey, love-chasing mates
A strange hive of splendor

Witness the foreboding sea-vampire
Black and menacing in his lurking swim
Tailed by needle-thin fish
And bubble-like cnidarians
The jellyfish of the undersea

Gliding across the ocean floor
Isistius brasiliensis, alone in her hunt
A cookiecutter with more cut than cookie

The illumined bulb of a seadevil dances in the eternal night
Attracting an unsuspecting goanna
Catching him in her deadly jaws
A true femme fatale of the deep

Ah! A swarm of comb jellies
A bright and ebbing wave
Faint, but gentle in its glow

As soon as it had come
The Christmas-light world shuts down
As a carnival leaves a summer town
One by one, the lights dim sadly
Leaving a tenebrous void

Gone now is the exciting glory
The ghosts of the undersea
Returned to their graves

What is more beautiful than light in the dark? The undersea world is one of mystery and intrigue. So many new creatures are being discovered down there each day, millions by the year, that even now, after 40-some years of exploration, it stills baffles marine biologists to this day.

The deep-sea creatures I described are as follows:

1. Vampire Squid, aka "sea vampire"

2. A needlefish might describe the needle-thin fish I described, though most live in shallow waters. This may be an undiscovered subspecies of it.

3. A "bubble-like cnidarian" describes the Sea Gooseberry, a type of deep-sea jellyfish.

4. Isistius brasiliensis, aka the Cookiecutter Shark

5. Black Seadevil

6. Goanna fish

7. Comb Jellies

Aaaaand there ya go! That's that, some of the many wonders of the sea.

Please, tell me what you think, I'd much appreciate your opinion.

I love the mysteries of the sea. Y'already know what I think of this, so suffice it to say, it's damned good.

Hehe, thanks! Cheers for Jacques Yves Cousteau and his wonderful exploration of the briny deep. He certainly inspired me. :)

This is very pretty, and the imagery is extremely effective. I know nothing about deep-sea life forms, but I was still able to form a vivid picture as I was reading this.

:D Planet Earth rocked! And so did Blue Planet. Ah, to go back to the days where Discovery actually played documentaries...

Thanks!

Still, insanely delicious diction. I feel the need to describe that in another way, but it just fits.

I'm fond of the line

"Far beyond anyone’s ken"

for some reason or another.

You prettier than all and every together sunset I ever did see.

:D Thanks! The deep sea really intrigues me, and if all else fails, I'd like to be a marine biologist, specializing in deep-sea life. I'd especially like to look at the jellyfish and anglers.
